Distesa tra le montagne e il mare, Carrara è stata, ed è ancora oggi, meta di artisti, scrittori e poeti provenienti da tutto il mondo. Tra questi il grande scrittore inglese Charles Dickens (1812-1870) che durante la sua visita (23 e 24 gennaio 1845) riuscì a cogliere alcune peculiarità di questo territorio e a stento a conciliare la bellezza delle opere d’arte ammirate nei laboratori di scultura cittadini con la durezza del lavoro nelle cave.
La Filiale Italiana della Dickens Fellowship, oltre alla promozione dell’opera narrativa di Charles Dickens, si occupa dello studio e della valorizzazione di quella parte di Carrara che ospitò questa nutrita “colonia” di inglesi e americani nell’Ottocento, ed auspica che questa guida possa essere uno strumento utile per chi voglia approfondire la storia di una città unica.

Laid between the moutains and the sea, Carrara has always been the privileged destination of artists, writers, and poets from all corners of the world. Among the most eminent was Charles Dickens (1812-1870) who stayed in Carrara in January 1845, hosted by William Walton.
The renowned English writer understood the distinctiveness of this area but he had difficulty in reconciling the beauty of works of art produced in the marble workshops he visited in town with the harshness of the working life of the quarrymen and animals.
The Italian Branch of the Dickens Fellowship, beside promoting Charles Dickens’s literary works, deals with the study and the promotion of the area in Carrara which hosted the English and American “colony” in the nineteenth century. Therefore, the Carrara Dickens Fellowship hope that this guide can be a useful tool for those who wish to delve into the story of a town, unique on earth.
